Anko Sourcing is the exclusive direct sourcing arm of Kmart Group that operates the iconic retail brands Kmart and Target Australia. Anko Sourcing’s operations span the largest sourcing markets across Asia, including China, India, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia and Vietnam.

The focus of Anko Sourcing is on building strong, sustainable supplier partnerships to ensure we maintain the highest standards of quality and ethics while driving efficiency and innovation across our supply chains.

Our Journey 

1969

  • Kmart Australia opens its first store in Burwood, Victoria.
  • An estimated 40,000 people pass through the checkouts, taking over $97,000.

1978

  • Kresge exchanges a 51% stake in Kmart Australia for a 20% stake in Coles.

1988

  • Kmart expands to New Zealand and opens its first store in Auckland.

1994

  • Coles buys back all shares held by Kresge.
  • A long-term licensing agreement between Sears allows Wesfarmers to use the Kmart name in Australia and New Zealand.

2006

  • Kmart merges with Coles Group.

2007

  • Wesfarmers takes complete control of Coles Group, which includes Kmart and Target.

2008

  • Wesfarmers decides to invest $300 million in Kmart over the next five years.

2010

  • The year saw a large increase in Kmart EBIT by 74%.

2012

  • Australia’s first multi-level Kmart opens in Adelaide’s Rundle Mall.

2017

  • Wesfarmers purchases the Kmart brand name for use in Australia and New Zealand for $100 million outright, ending the licensing agreement.

2018

  •  Kmart and Target merge to form Kmart Group.

2019

  • Catch.com.au is acquired.

2023

  • Kmart and Target merges to form one business, two brands
